Ice flakes

At the end of the 19th century, with the rise of industrialization, refrigeration techniques developed for food preservation. In Boulogne-sur-Mer, a port naturally geared towards fishing activities, several icehouses appeared. The company “LES GLACIERES BOULONNAISES” was one of them. Founded in 1902, its purpose was the production of water ice (flake ice is made from water).

Now known as FRANCEGEL, our ice plant based in Boulogne-sur-Mer in the Hauts-de-France region is today the largest in France. With a production capacity of 40,000 tonnes, it produced 20,000 tonnes of flake ice in 2017.
